Her gracious gift to me

I was sad to hear that Betty passed away. What a wonderful woman that celebrated life. In the early 70’s I had the opportunity to live at the end of prospect road in the little guest house and felt part of the family. I lived in the guest house for about 2 years. Those were some of the most wonderful memories of my youth. Betty was so gracious toward me. I was struggling with many growing up issues.. I was working, selling cars, going back to school, girlfriend problems, and trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. It was the perfect place at the perfect time. I think Betty understood all this more than me at the time. I remember having very little money to buy food.. She would invite me up for dinner with Duff and fix a steak and salad.. It was awesome. Duff and I were like brothers. I’m thankful for this period of my life. I have many wonderful memories of the fun times, the natural beauty, the family, and the goats… Those smelly goats! Hahah.. Betty was so generous with her time. She always took the time to listen to me and encourage me when I needed someone to talk with.. Betty was very perceptive. I remember one day I was walking from my little house across the carport to get something out of my car. .. She stepped out the back door and said “ I knew that was you” I asked her “how did you know?” She said ..” I can tell by the way your walk… It sounds so determined”…. That stuck with me.. My mom had the same walk.. I even thought about her saying that to me today! Betty was a very generous woman and was always ready to help. I remember when my car broke down she said that I could use her car.. I didn’t, but I remember feeling like she had my back. Betty was always doing something creative and resourceful. I remember she had a sale for walnuts.. People would gather the walnuts . I was responsible for weighing them.. It amazed me how many people showed up to gather the walnuts.. Life has a way of moving faster than one can imagine.. I want to say Betty was there for me when I so needed someone. What a blessing she was in my life. By allowing me to rent her cottage, she gave to me one of the greatest gifts of all, awesome memories. Rest peacefully Betty, you will always have a special place in my heart …. Jim Armstrong
